Xinchejian
Xinchejian (新车间) is a hackerspace located in Shanghai, China. It aims to provide a collaborative space and resources for makers, designers, and DIY enthusiasts. The space supports, creates, and promotes creative projects related to physical computing, open-source hardware, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
A Space for Making
On March 13, 2011, Xinchejian established its first 100-square-meter space at 76 Anhua Road, Changning District, Shanghai, making it Shanghai's first makerspace. As the community rapidly grew, Xinchejian relocated to a new, larger address in 2012 to meet its expansion needs, and it has been in continuous operation ever since 1).
For many, this is more than just a workshop; it is an experimental ground and a creative club that emphasizes collaboration. Members share technologies and ideas, and also organize frequent and diverse community events—such as workshops, meetups, and project collaboration sessions—to promote the maker spirit and culture as an integral part of city life. The hardware, tools, and experimental space provided by Xinchejian give both professional and non-professional tech enthusiasts/makers a chance to engage in hands-on creation (an opportunity often hard to come by in many schools and companies). Many participants find like-minded people here and turn their ideas into reality, an experience that is relatively rare in most Chinese cities. Consequently, Xinchejian has gradually become a bridge that not only introduces international maker concepts to the local community but also makes technology a less intimidating subject. It serves as a comprehensive platform for the “Technologized People” and “The People's Technology,” where regional alternative technologies and personal projects can be discussed and showcased, providing a crucial buffer zone for people navigating the context of global technology.
